BBC iPlayer draws in record viewership for England vs Croatia

“It’s coming home” sang the supporters who were lucky enough to be inside Wembley Stadium for England’s opening EURO 2020 game against Croatia. Whilst supporters cheered on The Three Lions onto a 1-0 win, the rest of the country were equally as vocal in their support to the national team.

The game drew in a TV audience of 11.6 million viewer; and the BBC iPlayer set a new live viewing record of  3.9 million viewers, whilst being streamed 4.5 million times on the iPlayer and BBC Sport Online.

This goes onto prove the huge impact digital is having on live sport and television in general. YouTube has also become the home of sports highlights, with both the BBC and itv Sport showing day-to-day highlights EURO 2020 matches. In recent times, the Premier League and BT Sport have also opted to show highlights of league games om YouTube, providing fans with action straight after the final whistle.

The conveniency of the BBC iPlayer remains in-tact, and the more England progress (hopefully), could we see the current record surpassed?
