Ecommerce trends for 2025

The possibilities of online shopping as well as the experiences have accelerated greatly throughout 2024. With the rise of social commerce and sustainable practices, consumers’ expectations have risen. This has led to the rise of quick commerce, as well as virtual and metaverse experiences becoming more present in Ecommerce strategies and customer experiences. We expect these trends to gain more momentum throughout 2025 and beyond.

A few predictions:

What other trends can we expect to see?

Social Commerce to expand

Social platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest will become even more integral to eCommerce, allowing users to shop directly within apps. Instagram Shopping, Facebook Marketplace have features that allow users to discover and purchase products directly on their platform. TikTok Livestream shopping events, already popular in Asia, will gain traction in the UK.

Sustainability will remain a dominant purchasing factor

Sustainability will become a dominant purchasing factor in 2025, with consumers favouring eco-friendly packaging, carbon-neutral shipping, and ethically sourced products. Retailers will need to align with green initiatives to meet consumer expectations. Resale and second-hand eCommerce will continue to rise, with platforms such as Depop, Vinted, and eBay growing in popularity as consumers look for more sustainable shopping alternatives.

Cross-Border eCommerce Expansion

In 2025, UK retailers will increasingly target international markets, with cross-border eCommerce becoming easier thanks to improved logistics, local payment options, and simplified returns processes. EU and US markets will remain key targets, while emerging markets will offer new opportunities.

Rise of Quick Commerce

As consumers continue to demand faster fulfillment, the rise Quick Commerce will accelerate in the next year. Same-day and even one-hour delivery will become more common in 2025, driven by local fulfillment centers and advanced logistics solutions. The shift toward online grocery shopping will continue throughout 2025, with rapid delivery services like Getir, Gorillas, and Deliveroo expanding their presence across UK cities.

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) Growth

Payment solutions such as Klarna, Clearpay, and PayPal Pay in 3 have become favourable options in 2024 with consumers, and we expect to see the increase grow in 2025. Retailers will offer more flexible payment plans to attract younger shoppers and increase conversion rates. As BNPL grows, regulation in the UK will tighten, ensuring that consumers are protected and that lenders follow stricter credit-check practices.

Efficient Delivery Solutions

To meet rising consumer expectations for faster and more efficient deliveries in 2025, retailers will likely explore drones, autonomous vehicles, and local courier partnerships. Eco-friendly delivery options, including electric vehicles and bike couriers, will become more popular as consumers look for additional greener options.

Metaverse and virtual shopping experiences

Virtual stores will continue to allow businesses to showcase products in interactive 3D environments, enabling customers to "try on" products virtually, enhancing the shopping experience. According to Mintel Store, 26% of UK consumers agree that brands launching products in a metaverse give them a reason to experience one.

More brands will launch immersive ad campaigns and product placements within popular virtual worlds like Roblox, Fortnite, and Meta’s Horizon Worlds; as well as retail and fashion brands such as Nikeland and Vans World.
