Google to build $1bn UK data centre

The UK remains a global centre for tech investment; and in addition to Microsoft’s  investment in the UK's AI infrastructure, Google have announced their plans to boost AI and cloud services.

Google intends to allocate $1 billion (£790 million) for the establishment of a new data centre on the outskirts of London.

Positioned on a 33-acre plot in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, the server farm will play a pivotal role in supporting widely used digital services, such as Google Cloud, Workspace (comprising Gmail, Docs, and Sheets), Search, and Maps, catering to individuals and organizations globally.

Ruth Porat, President, and Chief Investment Officer of Google and Alphabet, emphasised in a statement that this upcoming data centre will address the increasing demand for AI and cloud services, providing essential computing capacity to businesses throughout the UK whilst generating employment opportunities in construction and technology for the local community. Google also highlighted that the facility will utilise the generated heat to benefit local homes and businesses.
