How to prepare for an assessment interview

Throughout the hiring process, there is likely to be more than one stage; and it is not uncommon to encounter an assessment during the closing stages to confirm your suitability for the position.

While an assessment may seem daunting at first thought, it is just a way for a hiring manager to assess your skillset as well as test your problem solving and critical thinking skills. The assessment’s can be carried out through a variety of methods. You may be asked to return to the workplace to complete the assessment, or you may be directed to an Assessment centre. Consequently, you may be sent the assessment (or a link) and be required to complete it online.

This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your strengths, but also remember there may be a few questions to try and catch you out, so it is important to prepare thoroughly.

What could the assessments consist of?

Whilst assessments vary depending on the sector and position, they are likely to consist of the following tests:

  • Ice-breaker activity
  • Aptitude tests
  • In-tray or e-tray exercises
  • Presentation
  • Group exercises
  • Interviews
  • Written exercise

Some of these or all of the listed activities could be presented during an assessment stage. If your assessment is online, activities which require you to be there in person will not be required. For example if you’re entering the final stages of a marketing position, you may be required to create a campaign or provide some written content to demonstrate your copywriting and creative skills; or analysts may be asked to analyse some data and pick out patterns.

How can you prepare successfully for an assessment? Let’s take a look:

Know what to expect

In order to be prepared for any type of assessment, you’ll need to know what to expect. Be sure to ask as many questions as possible to organisers as to how you will complete the assessment, the type of questions you’ll be asked, whether it’ll be in-person or online, the duration and potential dress code.

Additional research on the role and the requirements

You must remember that the assessment will be testing your skills and abilities based on what is required for the position. It is recommended that you go back and re-examine the role and the requirements to get a clear picture of how you can be a good fit for the position.

You can also go over the website again to discover the company ethos and what they look for in candidates, as well as the latest news surrounding the business.

Review your application

Considering there is likely to be a number of stages in the hiring process, it may be beneficial if you go back and review your application and CV so it’s fresh in your mind. Your interviewer may refer back to your CV and motivations for the position if there is an additional interview – so be prepared to talk them through every point.

Identify the competencies in the position

Your scenario-based skills are likely to be tested. Every job will have potential scenarios where you are called upon to solve an issue. By identifying the competency skills in the job description, you can find the requirements in the role that your skills relate to.

Practise aptitude tests

Aptitude tests are a great way to test your logical thinking skills. It’s key to remember that your aptitude skills may not be tested, it is important to find out the type of assessment you’ll be taking; that way, you’ll be able to prepare more accordingly.

Aptitude tests are known to cover: Numerical and verbal ability, accuracy and precision; whist testing your critical thinking skills.

Plan ahead

You know the saying: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. That’s it. This doesn’t just apply to the test itself, but the day itself. If you’re required to attend a centre to complete your assessment, the biggest setback you can give yourself is turning up late and unprepared. Be sure to have travel arrangements set well in advance, and have your attire laid out and ready to go.

Your assessment could potentially be the deal-breaker when it comes to a job offer; so it’s important you prepare thoroughly so you can tackle the assessment with success.
