Who doesn't like a wander around IKEA? It has been the world's largest furniture retailer for almost 10 years and is the perfect place to find accessories and ready-to-assemble furniture for your home. Many of you will have spent more hours than you'd care to admit meandering around the different set ups and deciding which one you like best- while arguing with your nearest and dearest about which cushions would suit the lounge better. IKEA have released a virtual reality app, the IKEA VR Experience, on the leading game platform Steam.
Virtual reality gadgets and apps have becoming increasing popular and prominent over the past few years. IKEA's app was created with the intention of gathering customer feedback and providing them with a unique way to view their furniture. To use the app, consumers would need to wear the HTC Vive headset and this would then let them explore three kitchens each designed with a different style and aesthetic. The experience will provide users with the chance to look around a life-size view of the different kitchens and alter the appearance based on their preferences.
In addition to this, users will also be able to manipulate the colour of the cabinets and drawers with a simple and quick click. One of the more notable features of the app allows you to view the kitchens from different perspectives, as if you were really there. As a user, you can use the app to see how each member of your family will view the kitchen by shrinking yourself from a 3.3 foot-tall child or a 6.4 foot-tall adult. This means that you are able to put yourself in the shoes of your loved ones and also use the app to spot potential dangers or hazards that you may not have recognised before.
This app is an example of how virtual reality is becoming part of our daily life and the opportunities that it can afford us in terms of making our lives easier. From video games to interior design, reality and virtual reality are getting closer together.
