The world of social media is at everyone's fingertips and comes with that, the unfortunate instance of hacking. Finding out your social media account has been hacked isn't the most pleasant feeling (it's almost like having your house broken into) maybe?
Having to go through the whole process of cleaning up any unpleasant activity that may have taken place, as well as going through a password reset, can be a bit of a hassle. Instagram, that has a staggering 1 billion active users every month, is now testing features to help users regain control of their account once they have been hacked. In recent findings, due to a surge of issues regarding hacked accounts, users have found it hard to take back control of their accounts, even after notifying Instagram.
Having this feature would be welcome for many Instagram users. An Instagram spokesperson said, ‘We know that losing access to your account can be a distressing experience,' they also went on to say ‘We have measures in place to stop accounts from being hacked in the first place, as well as measures to help people recover their accounts.’
However, many users have not felt that those measures are helpful as a figure at Instagram added 'But we heard from the community that these measures aren't enough, and people are struggling to regain access to their accounts.' These new features will look to provide a more robust recovery to victims by having a six-digit code to their phone or email. This is due to hackers holding the handle to ransom or selling it on the black market.
Last year it was reported that hackers had particular success by successfully targeting online influencers in the fitness world, but then offering their accounts back to them in exchange for a sum in cryptocurrency. Hackers were able to access influencers’ information through a number of methods, in particular, phishing emails. In one documented case, an influencer was sent an email from someone posing as a brand which contained a malicious link. This then led to the hackers changing their account passwords and demanded its owners pay a ransom.
Although Instagram plans to implement this new security feature, there are also steps which users can to ensure their account is kept secure. These include:
Instagram security features plan to give users a safer platform. Hackers…beware.
