SME’s are going digital

BT has urged small businesses in the UK to move from analogue technology to digital networks before the end of 2025, as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is set to be retired.

In 2024, BT moved nearly 300,000 business lines to digital and research has revealed one in five SMEs (22%) still use traditional landlines, fax machines, and paper-based systems, which is likely to lead to major service disruptions as the network is phased out.

As the government and BT look to improve national connectivity, businesses who have already made the switch have reported benefits in doing so. According to research conducted by Ofcom, 80% say digital solutions give them an advantage, while 79% have gained more customers.

While some SME’s have embraced digital solutions and reaped the rewards, there is still a nationwide initiative to encourage all businesses to follow suit.

What are the benefits that small businesses can gain by adopting digital?

Enhanced Efficiency and Productivity

Digital tools, such as cloud computing, automation, and AI-powered solutions, can significantly streamline business operations. These technologies help reduce manual tasks, improve communication, and increase overall productivity, allowing SMEs to do more with fewer resources.

Cost Savings and Better Resource Management

Transitioning to digital platforms can help SMEs cut costs in a number of ways. Cloud-based solutions will reduce the need for expensive hardware and maintenance, while automation minimises labour costs associated with repetitive tasks. Overall, digital marketing can be more cost-effective than traditional advertising methods.

Improved Customer Experience

With the increase in digital shopping experiences, customers now expect seamless and efficient digital interactions. A strong online presence, user-friendly websites, and digital payment options enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty. SMEs that utilise CRM systems are likely to better understand customer behaviours and personalise experiences, leading to improved retention rates.

Greater Market Reach

Going digital allows SMEs to reach a global audience. Ecommerce platforms, social media, and digital advertising enable businesses to connect with customers worldwide. In addition to connecting with a broader customer base, increased market reach can present new revenue opportunities and enhance brand visibility.

Better Data-Driven Decision Making

With digital tools, SMEs can collect and analyse real-time data to predict trends and make informed business decisions. The use of analytical tools provides insights into customer preferences, sales trends, and operational performance, allowing businesses to adapt quickly and stay ahead of competitors.

Enhanced Security and Compliance

As cybersecurity threats continue to rise, digital allows small businesses to adopt security measures to protect sensitive business and customer data. SMEs can benefit from encrypted communications, secure cloud storage, and compliance with data protection regulations such as GDPR.

Future-Proofing the Business

The business landscape is constantly evolving, and digital adoption ensures SMEs remain resilient in the wake of economic changes and technological advancements. Failing to adapt presents a risk in slow progression and being left behind by competitors.

Conclusion

Statistics have reinforced the need to embrace digital as well as the benefits it brings such as increased customer acquisition and sales. BT’s push for SMEs to embrace digital transformation comes at a crucial time when UK businesses must innovate to thrive.
