Why resiliency in your job search is vital

There's no umbrella approach when it comes to what can work for us on an individual level on the job search, but after speaking to people who've been searching for a while there are a few things that can be done to stay proactive, energised, and positive during the search and things that could be avoided that can result in frustration and lead to ongoing stress.

Besides having an updated, easy-to-read, tailored CV, there are controllable elements of the job search you can action that aren't immediately obvious but can make a huge difference to your success in your quest for new opportunities.

But what are these elements?

The cluster grenade: It's obvious from a recruitment perspective that there are people who are blasting their CV all over the place until something sticks - there's a volumetric method to this madness, but it's important to work smart and hard - keep the number high, but try to keep it relevant to your skills and experience when applying, this way you're conserving energy and time and increasing your chance of success.

Keep things simple and just keep swimming: It's best not to chuck all of your eggs in one basket, apply, set a reminder time to follow up and move on to the next. Following up is important for roles with high numbers of applications, but it's important to keep trucking!

Keep it structured: Just like the last few points this is subjective and might not work for everyone, but searching for a new role can be like a full-time job, and it's important not to burn yourself out. Just like at work, it's important to take periodic time away from the job search to take part in practical and beneficial activities such as:

  • Online courses
  • Listening to podcasts about the industry
  • reading industry and sector-related books

It could be beneficial to structure your hours of searching to have a similar structure to a working day. Another approach is to set goals and targets around how many roles you apply for, Again this can help to conserve your energy for interviews and tasks and keep you putting your best foot forward.

Celebrate success: Even getting through an interview, having that initial chat, and getting your foot in the door is an achievement, it's great to recognise what's working!
